Welcome to our website, dedicated to the Playground Update for the Warren Lincoln Field. The field is located in the Waban neighborhood of Newton, Massachusetts, on Moffat and Montclair streets behind the Windsor Club. A group of neighbors came together to renovate the playground and this website contains the relevant information. Please send your comments to the Playground Committee.

Where we are as of  Monday July 02, 2007

Support & Funding:

q       Over $50,000 was raised from more than 250 donors.

q       The city donated $12,500 for the upgrade. This is the same amount customarily allocated to similar park initiatives.

q       The Village Bank  became our first corporate sponsor. Other corporate donors include: Newton Wellesley Hospital, Fleet Bank, Dr. Carl Spector and Dr. Sean Rockett Orthopedic Surgery, Hammond Residential RE, Wellesley Womans Care, Pediatric Healthcare at Newton Wellesley, West Newton Cinema, Shields Health Care Group, Whole Foods Market, X-Hale, Nancy Z. Bender Insurance Agency, Vona & Saris Contractors, ORACLE Corporation, Coldwell Banker, Cosmetic Dental Associates, Kinko's and RCN.

q       O'Brien & Sons, a company with much experience installing playgrounds using Landscape Structures equipment, supervised the volunteers in the construction of the playground late summer or fall 2003. Newton Parks & Recreation was also on hand. John Taylor was the representative.

q       Sage Builders of Newton volunteered 15K of services to complete the groundwork. (not included in above total)

q       Waban Improvement Society adopted the initiative as a key project for improving Waban.

q       Alderman Christine Snow Samuelson was on board the during the entire 2 and half years to help ensure our success with the process.

q       Robin Maltz, President of the Richardson Field Community Association, who initiated that park’s playground upgrade, was extremely helpful to the initiative.

q       Brigham House was our non-profit umbrella organization for the park upgrade, checks were tax deductible. Brigham House also sponsored the Angier Elementary playground build.

 Design

q       Our goal was to replace the old equipment with safer and more enjoyable items. New components include a fully enclosed toddler area, slides, climbing structures, and a Club House.

q       Due to durability and safety issues, the city no longer installs wood equipment. Landscape Structures is state-of-the-art equipment composed of polyester powdercoated metals and compression molded polyethylene. The ground cover is Fibar; a shredded, engineered wood fibre which is not chemically treated.

q       A mixture of toddler and elementary age equipment provides a wide level of enjoyment and also provides the only public toddler facility  within walking distance for western Waban.

q       The playground footprint is about a third larger than the older equipment's regulated footprint.

q       In an effort to blend with the natural surroundings, the color scheme of the play structures is blue, tan and green.

q       To address concerns about size and traffic congestion, the present plans were scaled back from previous plans. Also the city implemented a new policy which insists on a half hour "buffer" time between games scheduled at the Field.

q       The design does not impact the baseball or soccer fields. It uses the area presently occupied by the playground equipment and behind the bleachers and back stop. As a result of this upgrade, the baseball field got a new backstop.

q       Melanie Henriques headed up the design committee

q       The structures were outlined on the actual field October 23 for neighborhood review.
